What is a Cartridge Fuse?
- Cartridge fuses may still be found in some older domestic properties, and can be rated from 5A to 100A.
- They are similar in appearance to the fuses which are used in common mains plugs (plug top fuses), but cartridge fuses can vary in size in accordance with their rating.
For example a 30A Wylex cartridge fuse is 29mm long and 12.5mm in diameter, the 10A, 15A and 20A versions are 26mm long and 10mm in diameter, whilst the 5A version is 23mm long and 6mm in diameter.
Changing a Cartridge Fuse
- Replacements can still be purchased, and it should be possible for residents of the property to change a cartridge fuse with little more than a screwdriver and a bit of care.
Be sure to switch off the power to the cartridge fuse before removing the holder from its socket.
